Prepare to be obsessed with the moody, Victorian feel captured by Allie Appel Photography!
Written by Ariana of Styled by Ariana:
Our editorial was put together by stylist Ariana Anderson and couture gown designer Sarah Varca, two best friends with a passion for fashions spanning the centuries. Unlike many styled shoots that draw inspiration from often from seasons or venues, this editorial was entirely inspired by the three Varca gowns that evoke an ethereal, Victorian romanticism. Clean crepe edging the delicate sequin lace of swarming birds, unusual cuts and swaths of tulle make the gowns seem simultaneously reminiscent of centuries past and a glimpse of what is to come. All our choices for the shoot were made in support of the gowns and the strong, passionate woman who would wear them.
The venue complements the dresses’ timeless quality; as a three-story antique warehouse in Chicago, Salvage One has become an underground favorite wedding venue for some of the industrial city’s coolest couples. Its rooms are stuffed with treasures from the past and vintage furniture from every era, and its hallways are lined with old windows and doors. Taking advantage of the variety of spaces, backgrounds, and lighting in this singular venue, photographer Allie Appel captured the couple as they wandered through room after room, almost getting lost in the varied spaces, but always finding themselves deeply in love. Her stunning photos give the sense that the couple is exploring the labyrinthine space, hand in hand and definitely in style.
Drawing from the three gowns’ moody intensity, stylist Ariana Anderson selected rich textures and intoxicating tones including wine reds, deep blues, grays, gold, and pops of ultraviolet in creating this intimate lovers’ table. It features an outré cake made by the photographer's fiancé, black and gold table settings, and dreamy loose-cut florals. These colors were echoed in the velvet and feathered accessories selected, and the almost Gothically romantic hair and makeup by Tranquility Salon. Mary of Persephone Floral created a cascading bouquet inspired by Victorian still-life paintings, and the collaboration is topped off with a boldly simple hand-lettered invitation suite created by Sablewood Paper Co.
We feel this editorial stands apart in its sensuality—giving a new depth of inspiration for couples looking for romantic moodiness for their big day. As Chicago wedding professionals ourselves, we understand your readers are always searching for new, elevated inspiration for their weddings. Our fresh take on dark romance is certainly that!
