Elegant Jewel-Toned Wedding

Rich and moody colors came together to compliment the elegant ambiance of SAIC Ballroom for Emily and Brian’s jewel-toned wedding day. In addition to their romantic decor, their love for one another and their shared love of music was made evident throughout the day through moving songs and a dance floor that was never left unoccupied! About the Couple

Emily & Brian met while studying at VanderCook College of Music to be music teachers. Brian followed that path and is now a band director, while Emily veered off into wedding planning. But music is a huge part of who they are and their story. It all began when Emily joined VanderCook's Jazz Band as their singer. Brian loved her voice and needed to hear more. They bonded over their mutual love of craft beer and How I Met Your Mother, and their first date was "by accident" after a group outing to Hopleaf fell through and Brian and Emily went by themselves. After Hopleaf they went to the Green Mill to listen to Jazz music...and the rest is history.

Brian proposed by recreating their first date. In planning the wedding having live music was of the highest importance to Brian, and the space needed to be able to support the big sound of a full band-- thus, the SAIC Ballroom and the Bluewater Kings were booked.

About the Wedding

Emily and Brian wanted to highlight their love for music throughout the day. Emily walked down the aisle and referenced in her vows "Crazy He Calls Me" as made popular by Billie Holiday. This song is the song Emily auditioned for the jazz band with and the first duet Brian and Emily performed together. It holds a lot of meaning for them. The verse Emily referenced was “They say I’ll care forever. And I mean forever. If I have to hold up the sky. Crazy he calls me--sure I’m crazy--crazy in love am I”. In keeping with their love of music, Brian and Emily also had a custom cake topper with a clef heart made for them on top of their cookie cake made by Emily's friend from college.

Emily and Brian love moody colors and wanted to make design choices that were bold and would compliment all of the red, gold and green tones within the ballroom. They also had gold dipped concrete letters on their sweetheart table that read "Love You More". The words “Love You More” are important to Emily and Brian, as they say it to each other all the time-- they even had a laugh that Emily said her vows second and thus “wins” because she had the last word. “Love You More” was also found in the Mother/Son dance to “In My Life” by the Beatles, as well as in Emily and Brian’s entrance song “More Today (Than Yesterday)”.

Emily and Brian's day was cold and rainy, so adjustments for photos were made on the fly. But they didn't care-- their love is so passionate and Emily could not hold it together for their first look. They could have looked into each other's eyes forever. In fact I'm sure they will.

Brian and Emily were surrounded by friends and family, and friends and family members had important roles in their big day. Emily's Uncle officiated the wedding and Brian's dad read a prayer. A friend of Emily’s baked the cookie cake, Family members delivered spectacular speeches, and they had a bridal party that was on top of it all. The day was full of love and support from the people they love most.

The dance floor was never empty, and still everyone is raving about the perfect day and the beautiful vows shared between Brian and Emily. It was truly a magical night and it set the tone for a marriage sure to be full of love, laughter, and music.
