So, it’s happened! You’ve officially found “The One”, have said “yes!” and are currently knee deep in the wild world of wedding planning.

Wedding planning – while so exciting - can sometimes be a smidge overwhelming. There are SO many decisions to be made. Are you dreaming of throwing the “party of the century” or opting for an intimate elopement? Does the fast-paced energy of downtown Chicago make your heart beat faster, or is golden hour light and a serene suburban country club setting more up your alley?

Chicagoland has endless options when it comes to beautiful venues, world-class vendors and stunning vistas.

As a Chicago wedding photographer with ten years and hundreds of weddings under my belt, I strongly believe that the very first place an engaged couple should start in the planning process happens to be the only wedding planning decision you’ll make with merely four options to choose from.

With all that being said…what time of year feels right for you two to take that big walk down the aisle?!

Believe it or not, this decision will have a huge impact on your wedding photos. Every season transforms this city into a different backdrop. Summertime from the color pallet to the seasonal florals to the quality of the natural light available, choosing your wedding season is a big deal!

If you're trying to decide exactly when to say "I do," here's what each Chicago season really brings to the table when it comes to your wedding photography.

Summer: Bright Skies and Iconic Skyline Shots

Chicago during the summertime is everything. It’s so wonderful that we locals unanimously agree that they make living here during the winter bearable, knowing that the payoff will be well worth being in a deep freeze for months. So it’s no wonder why it’s also easily the most popular time of year to get married in Chicago. Long daylight hours mean more flexibility for your photo timeline. Pair that with the glittering waters of Lake Michigan in the sunshine and the one-of-a-kind sunsets over the skyline and we can unanimously agree that it’s an unbeatable combination.

What makes summer weddings so special:

Crisp, saturated colors — think deep blue skies against Cloud Gate (aka “The Bean”) in Millennium Park and delicate fields of lavender in the Lurie Garden.
Lush summer greenery at spots like Lincoln Park and the Lurie Garden.
Access to seasonal gems like the South Garden at the Art Institute of Chicago.
Golden hour light that stretches later into the evening, giving you more time for portraits without rushing dinner.
Rooftop and skyline shots that really pop against clear summer skies.

Things to plan around: Chicago summers can be hot and humid, so late afternoon or early evening ceremonies tend to photograph best. Your photos will reflect softer light, cooler temperatures and less squinting in your portraits. Popular outdoor spots also get crowded with tourists, so building a little buffer into your timeline for backup locations is smart.

Fall: Warm Tones and Dramatic Light

Fall is a favorite among photographers for a reason. As the foliage turns amber, rust, and gold, Chicago's parks and tree-lined streets are transformed into romantic settings worthy of Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks strolling through in a classic rom-com.

What fall photos bring to the table:

Warm, golden-hour light arrives earlier in the day and highlights the stunning foliage.
Rich color palettes — burgundy, mustards, and terracotta tones that call for stunning floral pallets.
Cozy textures: think wool sweaters, leaves underfoot, and soft directional light through changing trees. This time of year naturally evokes effortless, romantic vibes.
Beautiful contrasts between fall foliage and the city's architecture, especially in neighborhoods like Lincoln Park or along the 606 Trail.

Things to plan around: Fall weather in Chicago is unpredictable — a warm 70-degree day can turn windy and 40 degrees within a week. Peak foliage usually hits mid-October to early November, so if colorful leaves are a must-have in your photos, that's the ideal window to aim for. It's also one of the busiest booking seasons, so photographers and venues fill up fast.

Winter: Moody, Elegant, and Unexpectedly Stunning

Winter weddings have been having an uptick in popularity in the Chicago wedding world and for couples willing to embrace the cold, the payoff is well worth it! Whether you want to play-up the gorgeous holiday lights a la a Hallmark Christmas movie or lean into dramatic, editorial-style imagery, it’s a mistake not to at least consider a winter wedding in the city!

What winter photos offer:

Soft, diffused light from overcast skies (often described as nature's giant soft box) which is incredibly flattering for portraits.
Snow-covered skylines and twinkling city lights that add instant magic and texture.
Fewer crowds at iconic outdoor locations, meaning more room to shoot without tourists in the background.
Cozy, intimate indoor portraits near fireplaces, string lights, or floor-to-ceiling windows.

Things to plan around: Short daylight hours mean your planner and photographer will need to plan the timeline carefully. Many couples opt for a first look earlier in the day to maximize natural light. Outdoor portrait sessions are usually kept brief, with a warm indoor space nearby for coat breaks. If most of your portraits will be held after the sun sets, make sure you hire a photographer whose flash work makes you swoon!

Big upside: winter is typically the most budget-friendly season to throw a dazzling Chicago wedding. Most venues (and some vendors) offer special discounts at this time of year.

Spring: Soft Pastels and Fresh Blooms

Spring is the official “holy smokes, we made it through the winter!” time of year in Chicago, and it’s also the season that offers blooming magnolias, tulips for days and soft daylight that results in timelessly romantic, pastel-toned photography. Spring weather can be less than predictable, so choosing a venue with gorgeous indoor options is a must. But for couples chasing a fresh, delicate aesthetic, it's most definitely worth considering.

There's no wrong answer — it really comes down to the mood you want your photos to capture:

Want vibrant, iconic skyline shots? Summer is your season.
Want warm, romantic tones with minimal styling? Fall delivers effortlessly.
Want dramatic, editorial, once-in-a-lifetime imagery? Winter is worth the cold.
Want soft, dreamy pastels? Spring quietly steals the show.

Whatever season you choose, the most important factor is working with a photographer who knows how to use Chicago's light, weather, and landmarks to your advantage.
