For DJ’s, It’s All About Location, Location, Location!

Written by Trevor Harris, curator and owner of Total Harmony Entertainment

When couples go to tour their venue, they often think about where the ceremony will be, where the cake will go, and where the head table will sit. The DJ setup often gets relegated to wherever there happens to be an outlet and a spare corner. I understand why it happens, but as a DJ, where I’m located in the room has a real impact on how your celebration feels.

Here are three reasons I encourage couples and planners to place the DJ close to the dance floor, and centered in the room whenever the layout allows.

1. The Sound Reaches Everyone Evenly

Speakers are meant to fill the room and the dance floor, not overpower the dinner tables or leave the back of the room feeling empty. When I’m set up near the dance floor I can position speakers where they serve the space best and I can hear exactly what the guests are hearing.

This matters a lot more than people realize. If I am standing far from the dancing, I am adjusting levels based on a sound that is different from what is happening where guests actually are. A central and close position lets me balance volume so the dance floor feels full and energetic while conversations at nearby tables remain comfortable.

2. The DJ can read the room as it happens

The best musical decisions I make at a wedding are rarely planned in advance. They come from observing what’s happening in front of me in real time.

From a spot near the dance floor, I can see faces, body language, and the small shifts in energy that tell me what the room needs next. If I am tucked into a far corner or behind a stage, I am guessing. Up close, I am responding.

3. It keeps the focus on you and your guests

This one may sound surprising. My job is to support your celebration, never to become the center of it. A thoughtful placement helps with that. When I am close to the dance floor but integrated into the room layout, with a clean setup and a polished presentation, I blend into the celebration. Guests feel connected to the music without feeling like they are watching a performance.

When the DJ is pushed to an unusual corner, things can feel disconnected, and the dance floor can end up feeling like an afterthought. Keeping the setup close and centered ties the entertainment into the heart of the room, where it belongs.

A Few Tips For Your Planning

  • Share a floor plan early - Bring the DJ into the conversation while the layout is still flexible. A small change to the table layout can make a BIG difference.

  • Remember the practical details - I will need access to power, enough space for a polished setup, and a clear line of sight to the floor. Your venue coordinator and planner can help me find the best spot.

  • Consider incorporating the DJ setup in the design - I take great pride in the way my setup looks. A floral arrangement or other design detail can help amplify the look of the setup and weave it into your overall vision.

  • Talk to your vendors - Your photographer, band, and planner all benefit from a thoughtful layout. When everyone works together, the whole evening feels more cohesive.

The best events are carefully planned but never feel overly scripted. Where your DJ stands might seem like a small decision, but it gives me the best chance to make the right choices in the moment, and that is where the magic happens. Make sure you take these points into consideration while planning your event.
