Timeless in the City - A Styled Editorial at the Art Institute of Chicago

Some rooms in Chicago are so familiar we've stopped looking at them. The Art Institute is one of those - a building most of us have walked through since childhood, usually on the way to something else. This shoot started as a simple question: what happens if two people stand still inside it, and nobody is in a hurry?

Photographed on July 1, 2026, Timeless in the City is a styled editorial built around restraint. Ashlee Stapleton of Ashlee Stapleton Events planned and coordinated it and modeled as the bride, with her husband Jason stepping in as the groom. I built the shot plan - the locations, the timing, and the order we'd move through the building.

Ashlee wore a clean-lined Pnina Tornai gown, lace and beaded bodice giving way to soft tulle, with a long veil that moved with its own gravity. Jason wore a black tux from Emanuele Tuxedo, the dark fabric anchored everything around it. Hair was by Lia Nicole, makeup by Catherine Papadakis. The palette stayed deliberately narrow - ivory, black, and the warm cream of the museum's marble - and the images were graded cool and matte to match. The architecture was already doing the emotional work.

We moved through four spaces across the afternoon. The Grand Staircase, where the symmetry composes the frame for you and a statue waits above the landing like a quiet witness. The balconies of the Roger McCormick Memorial Court, where the columns frame a couple without any help and the light arrives in pockets. The long corridor outside the European galleries, where the light rakes across stone and the engraved inscriptions ground the images in a specific place rather than a generic beautiful room. And the Modern Wing, which offered an entirely different register - clean lines, a skylight grid overhead, the city held behind glass.

The direction throughout was minimal, because the goal was presence over posing. The frames that held were the ones that happened between instructions: a forehead kiss on the staircase with the statue standing above them like a third figure in the composition; a kiss framed through the columns, the veil trailing past the engraved inscription as though it belonged to the architecture; Ashlee genuinely laughing as Jason lifted her off the ground - a reaction no direction could have manufactured.

For couples considering the museum, that's the appeal, and it's worth saying plainly: the Art Institute doesn't need to be dressed up or lit heavily. It has been holding beauty for more than a century. The best thing a photographer can do inside it is get out of the way and be ready when something real happens.
