Mike & Lydia: Their Way, The Chicago Way

Written by Curator Kari Thirsk, owner of Wedding Day Chicago

Mike and Lydia didn’t just plan a wedding — they did it their way, in true Chicago style, with intention and purpose.

As a wedding coordinator, I live for couples who throw out the script and create something entirely their own. Timelines that feel personal. Menus that mean something. Moments that couldn’t belong to anyone else. I love it even more when a wedding leans fully into what makes our city great while reflecting the couple’s distinct style.

And Mike and Lydia? They understood the assignment.

So, with that, let’s take a little trip down memory lane to their wedding day.

A Chicago Winter Wedding Date

January 17th.

In Chicago.

If that doesn’t say committed-to-the-city, I don’t know what does.

There’s something undeniably bold about choosing the heart of winter for your wedding day. No spring blooms. No guaranteed sunshine. Just crisp air, fresh snow, and that unmistakable Chicago grit. Nothing says die-hard Chicagoan quite like a January wedding — and they wore it proudly.

Historic Charm at Café Brauer

They were married at the iconic Café Brauer, built in 1908 and rich with character. The Great Hall — where both their heartfelt ceremony and rockin’ reception took place — overlooks one of the city’s most beloved green spaces, Lincoln Park.

The views? Pure magic. Sweeping park scenery with the Chicago skyline rising in the background — that perfect blend of nature and city energy that feels quintessentially Chicago.

Before the celebration ever reached the dance floor, the ceremony itself set the tone in the most breathtaking way. Friends and family filled the hall with music — angelic vocals layered over violin, piano and the guitar.

It took me back to my Nashville days, to Sunday church services where some of the most talented singers and songwriters would quietly step forward to perform in their hometown congregations. There is something sacred about music offered in love, without pretense. That same spirit filled the room that day.

A dear friend presided as officiant, bringing a warmth and intimacy that only someone who truly knows the couple can offer. It was pure perfection — a reflection of the extraordinary community surrounding Mike and Lydia, not just on their wedding day, but in their everyday lives.

The beauty of the ceremony was only amplified by the stunning floral installations adorning the space. Lush arrangements softened the historic architecture, adding romance to the Grand Hall.

They braved the cold for portraits in the park (because of course they did), rosy cheeks and all. Major kudos to their ride-or-die wedding party for standing by their side in true subzero solidarity. If that isn’t real friendship, I don’t know what is.

To bring in lush greenery, they stepped inside the beautiful Lincoln Park Conservatory. The contrast of winter outside and tropical greens inside made for the dreamiest photos — layered, romantic, and uniquely Chicago.

A Very Chicago Menu

When it came to food, they focused on what Chicago does best: pizza.

Not just one pizza. Not one caterer. But a curated lineup from some of their favorite neighborhood gems, plus a nod to one of the city’s deep-dish legends, Giordano's.  From Lincoln Park to Logan Square, Ravenswood, and Buena Park, they made sure to cover the city’s culinary delights across a variety of Chicago neighborhoods.

It was nostalgic. It was personal. It was unapologetically Chicago.

For dessert, they served ice cream from one of their Logan Square favorites, Daisies — a neighborhood treasure consistently ranked among the best restaurants in the city, including recognition by The New York Times as one of the top 50 restaurants in America. Casual flex.

And their Peanut Butter Cookie Dough Brownie? Simply to die for.

Late-night treats included a massive candy bar complete with to-go bags — because nothing says “we love you” like sending guests home prepared for that post-party sweet craving.

The Honeymoon Vote

And then, one of the most unique wedding experiences I’ve ever witnessed. They let their guests vote on their honeymoon destination.

The options:

  • Kauai

  •  Slovenia

  • The Galápagos Islands

Now, anyone who knows me knows my deep love for Hawaii. I was fully rooting for Kauai. In fact, I was in charge of tallying the votes. Mike and Lydia, very aware of my affinity for the Hawaiian Islands, made me promise not to cheat.

I took the oath. I swore on all things wedding-day sacred.

And in a landslide victory? The Galápagos Islands.

My Hawaiian honeymoon dreams for them may have gone up in flames — but the Galápagos is hardly a consolation prize. So, a full week of snorkeling with sea lions, exploring volcanic landscapes, and experiencing once-in-a-lifetime wildlife encounters it is.

Not a bad way to begin forever.

A Rockstar Finish

The night ended exactly how it should: a packed dance floor and the kind of energy that only happens when a room is filled with your people. So much fun and so perfectly Mike and Lydia.

Weddings like this make my Chicago girl heart so full.

They didn’t follow trends. They didn’t play it safe. They chose January. They chose personality. They chose their city.

And in doing so, they created something unforgettable — their way.

The way it should always be.
