How to Order a Wedding Cake - All of your questions answered!
Written by Curator Erin Martin of ECBG Cake Studio
Your partner just proposed to you(!!!). Obviously, your immediate next thought is, ‘OMG, the wedding cake!’ Well, you're in luck. I'm going to give you the ECBG Cake Studio Insider Guide To Ordering Your Dream Wedding Cake. Whether you have always dreamt of a cutie lil cutting cake, or a 6 tier reigning goddess cake, we will help you every step of the way.
Step one is the tasting! Everything starts at the website, and you can find some information on booking your wedding cake tasting here! That inquiry form goes directly to our Wedding Manager, Sarah, who will take very good care of you via email. She will walk you through scheduling and help you decide whether you want to do a tasting in person during the week, or pick up a tasting to go on the weekend.
At the tasting you will sit down with Erin, the owner, or Izzy, one of our decorators, to help you figure out details like what flavor you are interested in, how many people you are trying to serve, and what design you are hoping for, among other details like cake floral and delivery details.
But of course, first we eat cake!
We provide a variety of 6 of our most popular cake flavors as well as 9 filling flavors. We love to provide items that anyone and everyone can enjoy like red velvet cake, cream cheese frosting, marble cake, and vanilla pastry cream- to name a few! Our cakes are 3 layers of cake and 2 layers of filling with the Italian meringue buttercream always being on the outside. Guests can choose more than one flavor option. If they wanted, each tier could be a different flavor profile. We love the options!
Then, we love to take the time to design the cake. Each couple has a different vibe and each cake design has a different personality. It is our job to find out what those vibes are and design a cake that is a perfect match for them. Buttercream cakes, which are on the lower end of the price range actually have a lot of options and versatility. Fondant covered cakes are an aesthetic choice and great for those who love marble cakes, complex textures, appliques in various shapes and sizes, or even handmade realistic 3D fondant flowers.
If your vibe is understated and more modest, and you just want a cake to cut, but you have 200 guests, don’t worry! We can do a 2 tiered cake to feed about 50 people and then sheet cake to feed 150 people. You can actually have your cake AND eat it too. The sheet cake would be unseen by the guest. That cake can be the same flavor or different flavors and will be cut up for everyone to eat. People will wonder how all that cake came from a two tier! Unless they've read this blog post.
Want to make your cake more personalized? Lots of people will adorn their cake with fresh flowers, fresh fruit, a figurine of their pet, french macaron, colors from their motif, or a cake topper. Speaking of cake toppers…A few very common questions we get are, “Do people still do cake toppers?”, “Do people still save the top tier?” and “Do people still do cake stands?” And I always like to reassure people that they can do whatever they prefer! There are no rules and anything goes these days! I just always suggest communicating their choices to their planner or venue as well so everyone is on the same page. We can coordinate that conversation as well!
There's many ways to customize your wedding cake whether you want something subtle or more extravagant. Moral of the story, when choosing and purchasing your wedding cake, your comfort, confidence, and excitement to see and taste it comes first and your imagination is always welcome! We always tell our couples to get what THEY want, what THEY feel like most captures their personality. And don't worry!! We will help walk you through it every step of the way!
