Traditional Assyrian Wedding in Chicago
Today’s wedding is absolutely stunning. We are excited to share this traditional Assyrian Wedding in Chicago with additional commentary for our wedding couple, Ashoorina (Rina) and George. Rina is a wedding planner herself (owner of Jadou Design Studio) so her attention to detail, understanding of the wedding world and planning ability really brought this day to life. Check out her answers below for lots of helpful tips on planning your own wedding!
Did you plan the wedding yourself or did you have a wedding planner?
As an event planner myself, planning my own wedding was the ultimate dream come true. I’ve spent years working with couples to bring their vision to fruition so it was just another exciting moment in my life to get to plan my own wedding.
Can you tell us about some of the traditional elements throughout your ceremony?
Being a Christian Assyrian, it is customary in our tradition to include elements that tie our unity in Christ together. These elements include drinking sacramental red wine (which depicts the blood of Christ), the crowning of the bride & groom (representing our unity as a couple), and the wearing of “kleleh” (a ribbon that is placed on both the bride & the groom’s arm to symbolize Christ joining in our unity).
How did you feel on your wedding day, having all of your plans come together?
I felt a huge sense of accomplishment knowing that my efforts in planning paid off. I spent countless hours creating vision boards, researching ideas, and playing around with different table settings to bring my vision to life.
Do you have any advice for someone who is just starting planning their wedding?
Do not rush to book vendors just to fill the void of not having one at the time. Take your time, do your research, and enjoy every little moment during your engagement, because time really does fly by fast. At the end of the day, your wedding is what you make it. Implement things that make you guys happy and tune out any unnecessary, unsolicited advice from others. At the end of day, only YOU know what's best for you.
What was the inspiration for your plans/designs?
I’ve always been inspired by Australian-style weddings. I wanted my wedding to exude that same elegance, class and sophistication. I am all about a timeless vibe vs. just going with the trend. Sticking with neutral tones and piecing everything together helped solidify the vision for my big day. I knew exactly what I wanted, how to make it work and how to get there.
What is your favorite memory from your wedding?
My favorite memory from our wedding would be our fun, memorable reception. From the heartfelt speeches, to the elaborate grand entrance, traditional dances, and hugs/kisses we shared with everyone, it was truly a night to remember.
A HUGE thank you for sharing your wedding day with us! xo
