Wedding Dress Emergency Kit: What I Recommend Every Bride Pack

By Tina Wong, bridal designer + curator at CHI thee WED

As a bridal designer, I've seen hundreds of wedding dresses make it through wedding days beautifully. The truth is that most gown emergencies aren't major emergencies at all…they're small, fixable issues that can happen during a long day of hugging, dancing, eating, and celebrating.

While I never want brides to stress about their dresses, I do recommend putting together a small wedding dress emergency kit. You most likely won't need any of these items, but if something unexpected happens, you'll be glad it's nearby.

Here are the dress-specific items I recommend every bride pack.

Fashion Tape / Double-Sided Tape

If I could only choose one item for a wedding dress emergency kit, it would be fashion tape. Fashion tape can help secure a neckline, keep sleeves in place, prevent gaping, and provide a little extra security if something shifts throughout the day. It's especially useful for strapless gowns, plunging necklines, off-the-shoulder sleeves, and low-back designs. Most brides never need it, but when they do, it can save the day in seconds.

Safety Pins

Safety pins aren't glamorous, but they are incredibly practical. They can temporarily secure a loose bustle, reinforce a strap, hold fabric in place, or help manage a minor issue until it can be properly repaired. I recommend packing several sizes just in case.

A Small Sewing Kit

A basic sewing kit can solve many common dress issues. Include: Needles, small scissors, and ivory, clear, white, nude-color threads. Even a few simple stitches can repair a loose hook, detached button, or small seam issue. If you're wearing a custom or heavily detailed gown, ask your seamstress if there are any dress-specific supplies they recommend bringing and make sure you have extra beads with you.

Stain Remover Pen or Wipes

Wedding dresses spend an entire day around food, drinks, makeup, and excited guests so a stain remover pen is a small item that can make a huge difference if you catch a mark quickly. The faster you address a stain, the better chance you have of preventing it from setting into the fabric.

White Chalk

This is one of my favorite bridal tricks as it can be a quick fix for mishaps like makeup smudges, lipsticks, deodorant marks, or scuffs. For example, if your hem picks up a small dirt mark or scuff during outdoor photos, a piece of white chalk can often camouflage it surprisingly well. It's not a permanent solution, but it can make marks virtually disappear in photographs until the gown can be professionally cleaned.

Extra Bustle Supplies

Bustles take a lot of wear throughout a wedding day. Ask your seamstress if they can provide spare bustle buttons, extra hooks, or other dress-specific repair materials. I also strongly recommend making sure at least one bridesmaid, family member, or planner knows how your bustle works before the wedding begins (share a video with them ahead of time!).

Lint Roller

A lint roller is one of the easiest ways to keep your gown looking photo-ready, especially if your furry family members are part of your big day. It's especially useful for satin, crepe, and other smooth fabrics that tend to attract lint, dust, and stray hairs. A quick pass before photos can make a noticeable difference.

Steamer Access

Many venues provide steamers, but I always recommend confirming this ahead of time and bringing your own small hand steamer anyway. Travel, transportation, and hanging can sometimes create wrinkles, especially in silk and satin fabrics. Having access to a steamer ensures your gown looks its best before you walk down the aisle and can be used for a mid-day touch up before the reception.

The Most Important Thing to Remember: Don't Panic

One of the biggest lessons I've learned after years in bridal is that almost every dress issue has a solution: A loose bustle can be pinned, a small stain can often be treated, or a stretched strap can be secured.

The vast majority of wedding dress "emergencies" are far less noticeable than brides imagine in the moment. Your guests won't remember a loose thread or a tiny wrinkle. They'll remember how beautiful you looked, how happy you were, and the joy of celebrating your marriage!

A wedding dress emergency kit isn't about expecting something to go wrong; it's just about having peace of mind so you can focus on what matters most… enjoying every moment of your wedding day!
