A Guide to Invitation Budget Levels | Chicago Wedding Invitations

Like most newly engaged couples, when you begin planning your wedding, you may not realize what options are available when it comes to selecting your wedding invitations and coordinating stationery.

For many couples, the search for invitations often begins with templates or well-known online retailers. These options are familiar, easy to navigate, and offer a simple way to order invitations.

In many cases, they reflect the types of invitations you’ve likely received before, which makes them a natural starting point.

While they are a beautiful and convenient choice, they represent just one part of the invitation landscape, especially when it comes to weddings.

In reality, wedding invitations range from simple DIY designs to fully custom suites, each offering a different level of personalization, materials, and detail. Your invitations are also the first glimpse your guests will have of your wedding.

Like many things, wedding stationery exists in levels, and with each level comes a different investment and experience. Understanding your options can help you choose an approach that aligns with your vision and your overall wedding budget.

How Much Should You Budget for Wedding Invitations?

It’s typical to allocate a percentage of your overall wedding budget to stationery.

Many sources suggest planning for around 4–6% of your total wedding budget for stationery. This includes more than just invitations. Your stationery budget may include:

Many sources suggest planning for around

4–6% of your total wedding budget for stationery.

• Save the dates

• Formal invitations and enclosure cards

• Envelope addressing and postage

• Day-of paper (menus, programs, escort cards or place cards, table numbers)

• Signage

• Rehearsal dinner or farewell brunch invitations

• Welcome bag stationery

• Thank you cards

Your stationery budget is not a fixed number. It naturally scales based on your overall wedding investment and your priorities. Not every couple includes all of these pieces, but it’s helpful to understand what may could be apart of your overall stationery experience.

A Real Example: $50,000 Wedding

To give this some context, here’s what a stationery budget might look like for a $50,000 wedding with up to 125 guests.

Using the guideline of 5% or more, your total stationery budget would be around $2,500 or more. From there, that budget is typically distributed across multiple pieces.

How Invitations Fit Into Your Overall Wedding Budget

It’s important to remember that invitations are just one part of your overall stationery investment.

In most cases, invitations make up approximately 40%–60% of the total stationery budget, with the remaining portion reserved for day-of details such as menus, programs, and signage.

This allows the entire wedding paper experience to feel cohesive, from the moment the invitation is received to the day of the celebration.

Wedding Invitation Budget Levels

Wedding invitations typically fall into a few general categories. Each level reflects a different experience, from design involvement to material quality.

A typical invitation suite may include pieces such as the invitation, RSVP card, and details card, along with envelopes, addressing, and postage. As you move through each level, the level of customization, materials, and finishing details naturally increases.

  • DIY Invitations | $500 or less DIY invitations are often created using home printers or online templates, allowing couples to manage the design, printing, and assembly themselves. This approach offers flexibility but requires a more hands-on investment of time and effort.

  • Traditional Invitations | $500 – $1.5K Traditional invitations are typically pre-designed and ordered from online retailers. While customization is limited, this option provides a simple and efficient way to send mailed invitations.

  • Custom Invitation Suites | $1.5K – $3.7K Custom invitation suites are where couples begin working with a stationer to create designs tailored specifically to their wedding. The result is a cohesive and personalized presentation that reflects the overall aesthetic of the celebration.

  • Luxury Invitation Suites | $3.7K – $12.5K Luxury invitation suites incorporate more refined details, including specialty printing, layered paper elements, and elevated embellishments. These additional design elements create a more tactile and visually impactful experience for guests.

  • Ultra-Luxury Invitations | $12.5K+ Ultra-luxury invitations are highly customized and often feature premium materials, intricate printing techniques, and extensive finishing details. Every element is thoughtfully designed to create a lasting and memorable first impression.

What Impacts the Cost of Wedding Invitations?

Several factors influence how much you’ll spend on your invitations:

• Guest count

• Printing method (digital vs. letterpress or foil)

• Number of pieces in your suite

• Paper quality and weight

• Design details such as monograms, liners, or embellishments

Even small upgrades can significantly change the overall look and feel of your invitations.

Choosing the Right Invitation Option

There is no one “right” budget for wedding invitations. It’s really about your priorities.

Some couples prioritize simplicity and convenience, while others place a higher value on design, materials, and the overall guest experience.

The best choice is the one that aligns with your vision and fits comfortably within your overall budget.

A Final Thought

Your invitations are more than just a way to share information. They set the tone for what your guests can expect and begin building anticipation for your celebration.

If you’re in the early stages of planning, understanding your options is the first step in creating a wedding experience that feels intentional from beginning to end.
