PROPOSAL

We were in Michigan for New Years Eve - his best friends were there with us and his parents. We were staying at his parents lake house. It was New Years Day and I was so tired! Haha I wanted to go take a nap. Kevin convinced me to go for a walk with him. We went down to the dock and his friends were holding a boom box playing calico skies by Paul McCartney. There was a walkway at the end of the dock with flowers and he led me down it - I just remember kissing him and saying OF COURSE

DAY OF DETAILS

-- during the ceremony, the officiant Marguerite did an amazing job, weaving the values and story of E+K for us. we were all very impressed afterwards and talked about how enthralling she was

-- a lot of wedding party were their mutual friends from Eastern Illinois University, it was basically a reunion for them and a lot of their guests

-- Emily's grandparents passed before her wedding day, she loved them deeply. she wore four rings on her right ring finger with their names and birthstones on them to carry them throughout their day.

-- wrapped around her Bouquet was a handkerchief with notes from her parents and both sets of grandparents embroidered in blue

-- K+E had a private first look with each other, after the ceremony they exchanged private vows

-- Dessert table included candy from various local stores so guests could make a goodie bag of candy

-- In Emily’s dad’s speech, he referenced a question they asked Kevin in their years of dating. “If you could have one superpower, what would it be?” We all held our breath to hear the next part- honestly I thought dad was about to deliver a punchline. I was wrong. “Kevin said he wished he had the ability to heal.” And then it made sense. Kevin started EMT training this year, and is on track to be a firefighter. Truly, he was working on his superpower. We all started crying.

-- Emily’s brother’s and sister’s read an Irish blessing over them. Meg, Emily’s childhood best friend, exchanged looks between Emily that only they understood.

Em + Kev danced toe to toe to this song as if they were the only person in the room, as if they regularly danced to this song in their living room. The energy in the room was palpable. Everyone stopped what they were doing to watch these two dance. It was like we were all sharing in a scared moment. It was beautiful.

The two danced to Banks by NEEDTOBREATHE, which doesn’t have a soft, romantic, “Thinking Out Loud” kind of vibe—it’s more of alternative rock song the builds and it just, wow.

The lyrics:

"I wanna hold you close but never hold you back
Just like the banks to the river
And if you ever feel like you are not enough
I’m gonna break all your mirrors
I wanna be there when the darkness closes in
To make the truth a little clearer
I wanna hold you close but never hold you back
I’ll be the banks for your river"
